One of his best known works is his 1952 “composition,” 4’33”, a piece that reflects his search for deep listening. The original performance featured David Tudor on stage of the Maverick Concert Hall, sitting down at a piano and not playing it for roughly four and a half minutes. The sole purpose of this pursuit for silence was to make people listen.
