I was asked to make a blog for the NYU IMA Low Res graduate program. (I started with no tangible experience in interaction design.) Math is nature’s poetry, and these are just diary entries.
Designed like small mazes, incense clocks were popular in ancient China during the early Qing dynasty. The user would set up the incense clock by creating a pre-measured powdered incense trail using a stencil, with each stencil representing a different amount of time. This was also used in an “alarm clock” system where the a few tiny metal balls would be attached to the clock by thin threads. These threads would then be hung over the top. Once the incense clock burned through the threads, they would break and drop the tiny metal balls into a bowl below, creating a loud “alarm.”
Also, the time of “一炷香” refers to roughly 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the incense stick used.
At the time of your birth, the time of your birth defines 8 characters that will govern your entire life, dictating 10-year cycles of “good,” “neutral,” and “bad” luck.
shí-kè (時刻) - shí (~1/12th of a day) and kè (~1/100th of a day)
This watch is of great interest to me because I constantly struggle with timezone switches. It’s very annoying when trying to schedule meetings for work... or even for school. This watch uses 16 landmark buildings to mark the time in different regions around the world.
My interpretation does not necessarily seem to be mentioned in the description; however, this reminds me of prayer (mala) beads that Buddhist monks use to count mantras and focus the mind.
In theory, the halvening will pump BTC prices. The halving decreases the amount of new bitcoins generated per block. As the supply of new bitcoins is lower, buying becomes more expensive.
In normal markets, lower supply with steady demand usually leads to higher prices. Since the halving reduces the supply of new bitcoins, and demand usually remains steady, the halving has usually preceded some of Bitcoin's largest runs.
There are 29 halvings remaning, roughly totaling out to 116 years. The last halving should occur in 2140.
BTC halving cycle.
Two Clocky Thoughts
1. Bichronol Beats
A sound-based timekeeper that uses binaural beats. It’ll be a web app that requires headphones.
Some people believe that binaural beats compel your brain to sync to it with the introduction of a new frequency, which launches you into a different “brain state.” For example, certain low frequencies are associated with deep relaxation and sleep (theta/delta). Other higher frequences are better for focus (beta/gamma). Midwave frequencies are associated with attention.
This timekeeper will not show any “time.” However, the frequency will be mapped to 24 hours. You could select what time of day you wake up, need focus, sleep, etc... Throughout the day, the frequencies change without any additional input from you.
I’d imagine an audioreactive visualizer as such that also displays the type of state the timekeeper is trying to bring you into.
2. $DOGEClock
Much degen.
Let’s say theoretically, this dogecoin timekeeper would have a graphical line that spirals around the “Doge” in the center, fluctuating based on the price of DOGE. One full rotation would be the time it takes the “moon” to move around the sun (to the moon!(?)). It would be a digital clock where doge memes fly around the screen. See sketch below.
(Side note: I think it’s quite ridiculous that internet memes can influence the financial system. And I also have much to say about the stereotypical crypto bro community...)
