ANNA M YANG
人算不如天算

I was asked to make a blog for the NYU IMA Low Res graduate program. (I started with no tangible experience in interaction design.) Math is nature’s poetry, and these are just diary entries.

On Games: Musings

“After all, this is what games do. They are not only playgrounds for free choice, but also training grounds for habits.”

Recently, I’ve been thinking about what it means to be human during a time when much of our reality is being increasingly mediated by screens. We quite literally have a separate (integrated?) form of reality being constructed around us. A few years ago, the “metaverse” was the next big thing- And I remember finding this word oddly intriguing. My friends were building new “realities” that were basically just MMORPG games, and I always wondered if they were enough to qualify as entirely new “worlds?”

“Crapstract.”

I also wonder where the line between deep, provocative commentary vs. measurable, gamified success metrics can be drawn. Are they even mutually exclusive? As one increases, the other must decrease? Could it be that the current financial system in the art world is the ultimate form of social commentary unto itself? Maybe it’s up to the audience...

“Can creatives think?”

Also in tangent with a question I’ve been considering. Can anyone think? Or are we just drifting along the ebbs and flows of whatever consciousness society has tapped into in that moment? I know that that’s not quite where Steyerl was going with this question, but it’s where my mind often wanders... Maybe free thinking is the ability to unlearn something.

Project 02: The Philosophy of Physics

I’ll most likely do something in the realm of The Philosophy of Physics. I haven’t quite decided on which realm to focus on though- Might look at the Observer Effect, Chaos Theory, time loops, parallel universes (as a prediction, not a theory), wavicles, a quantum relationship to Buddhism, or something else in this spectrum of ideas.

Research Plan Overview

I believe I will approach this from an advertising mindset- start by identifying the objective and targent audience, then move onto identifying the human insight before coming up with the creative concept.

There’s a book I’d like to finish reading during this phase: Our Mathematical Universe by Max Tegmark. It’s dense (been reading it on and off for a month now). After that, I will start looking into scholarly articles that examine different concepts in theoretical physics. Afterwards, I’ll start chatting up people from different walks of life. Hopefully by this point, I’ve selected a more interesting space to play in that’s rooted in some form of insightful strategy.
