ANNA M YANG
人算不如天算

I was asked to make a blog for the NYU IMA Low Res graduate program. (I started with no tangible experience in interaction design.) Math is nature’s poetry, and these are just diary entries.

IMALR-GT-201-12

WHEN: 1203/2024
WHAT: IMALR-GT-201
So, my documentation for this week bleeds into what I wrote in my last post. I will leave the photos/videos at the bottom of this post for reference. I’ve been reading Our Mathematical Universe and working on figuring out the insane interface that is Ableton.

I have a couple things I’m wondering- one of which is how I want to present this experience. One way is to make it highly personal and present a collection of sounds from life forms that I found of particular interest. Another option is to create an app for others to use.

I’m still figuring out which presentation model is best, given both the time and topic. (I might be leaning towards the personal collection as it allows more room for me to provide commentary on the duality of plants (or cats/people) as singular objects vs. the waves of electricity that flow through them/us), which will allow for more musings on the philosophy of physics.

User Journey

Regardles of which method of presentation I end up committing to, I believe the user journey will be quite simple as it is designed for an audience that is curious about reality vs. realism and the dualities present in this topic.

Success Rubric

My hope is to get people interested in wave-particle duality in order to question realism.

My hope is to create a synesthetic experience of electricity in order to make wavicles tangible.

My hope is to make something beautiful in order to increase my appreciation of the world around me.

My hope is to create music from Cali (a cat) in order to preserve a unique representation of his life here.

My hope is to bring a different perspective to physics in order to make more people curious (predominantly male field!).

My hope is to explore something I’m curious about in order to remind myself that there’s more to life than work.

My hope is to ask why I’m so obsessed with reality vs. realism in order to find out more about myself.

My hope is to ask questions about music theory in order to force myself to start exploring it.

My hope is to ask questions towards others in order to have them ask questions within.

Totally fulfilled: I build an app that my friends and other curious people can use to explore the duality of existence through sound/color produced from electrical activity in plants and other lifeforms.

Somewhat fulfilled: I have a working prototype with some sound and visual capabilities.

Not fulfilled at all: The device does not work, and nobody has that “eyes light up” moment.

KPI:

  • Device works and produces sound
  • Device works and can also produce visual output
  • My friends try the prototype and their eyes light up on our annual winter camping trip (12/6-12/8)
  • Finish reading Our Mathematical Universe
  • Learn more about theoretical physics
  • Do something fun, really fun
  • Remember why I started this journey (been difficult recently with the unreasonable working hours)
  • Connect with people I care about in a different way
  • SUPER KPI: build an app
